Today’s Wednesday Wisdom comes from “The Obstacle is the Way” by Ryan Holiday.

“In life our first job is this, to divide and distinguish things into two categories: externals I cannot control, but the choices I make with regard to them I do control. Where will I find good and bad? In me, in my choices” - Epictetus

Said another way- The Serenity Prayer- God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I can,

and the wisdom to know the difference.

The Stoics, the Budhists, and the Christians all agree that it is not the external forces acting upon us that have the greatest impact on our life--- it is our reaction to those forces.

So what is up to us? What can we control?

Our emotions

Our judgments

Our creativity

Our attitude

Our perspective

Our desires

Our decisions

Our determination

This is our playing field, These are the things in our control, These are the places and perspectives we can have an impact on. What is not up to us? Well…. basically everything else.. The weather, the economy, circumstances, other people’s emotions and judgements, disasters, etc.

A direct quote that I highlighted in the book. “Focusing exclusively on what is in our power magnifies and enhances our power. But every ounce of energy directed at things we can’t actually influence is wasted- self-indulgent and self-destructive. So much power---ours, and other people’s--- is frittered away in this manner”

I hope you find this as powerful as I did.

Take care of yourselves today, and if you can… someone else to!
